In late 2006, Western Australia's largest gas pipeline operator, WestNet Energy, embarked on major expansion of the Dampier - Bunbury pipeline, one of the longest gas pipelines in Australia. Most of the 1600km pipeline traverses extremely remote and inhospitable terrain, accessible only on rough gravel tracks. With 300 vehicles and 800 employees deployed on the project, ensuring their safety was a major challenge in this environment. A key issue for WestNet was ensuring that safe driving speeds were maintained on the gravel tracks and pipeline easement, as vehicle accidents have historically been the most significant cause of fatalities in these projects.
Fastwave was commissioned by WestNet to install over 300 FasTracker units in the vehicles used on the project. This presented a major logistical challenge, as most of the vehicles were already located at various points along the pipeline. To achieve this, a mobile installation squad travelled along its length, installing the units at night or during scheduled breaks.
Fastwave customised the onboard programming of the FasTracker units and the FastView system to produce a comprehensive vehicle safety and speed monitoring system (VSSMS) for WestNet. Since its deployment, there has been a significant improvement in journey management procedures, compliance with safe driving speeds and a dramatic reduction in vehicle safety incidents. The system subsequently has won the Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy 2008 Industry Safety Award.
