ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND CONTROL APPLICATIONS

Obtaining data from environmental sensors in remote locations has always been a major challenge. However, because data payload requirements for environmental applications are often quite low, the Iridium SBD system provides a cost efficient method of obtaining readings in near real time, retrieving logged data or re-programming remote data loggers.

Typical environmental applications include monitoring of automatic weather stations, air quality measurement sensors, hydrological stations, river and catchment monitoring, water quality monitoring, oceanographic data gathering, soil moisture monitoring, salinity monitoring and groundwater monitoring.

The FastComm product, configured with Iridium’s 9601 transceiver and solar or battery power supply provides an ideal solution for many of these applications.

Environmental monitoring applications often require multiple monitoring stations in close proximity, for example monitoring river water quality upstream and downstream from an outfall. In these situations, the monitoring sites can be hardwired back to a central Fastcomm RTU. Alternatively, over longer distances, short range radio links can be used, using low cost, self contained miniature radio transmitters from Radio Tech of the UK. The RTCom Integrated Sensor Technology Transmitters consist of radio transmitter, controller, data interface, transducer and antenna all housed in a self-contained IP 68 enclosure to give a cost effective alternative to using cables even over the shortest of distances. The built in battery gives an operating life of up to 10 years.
